Title: Characterization of oral Candida isolates from HIV infected and healthy individuals

Title: Characterization of oral Candida isolates from HIV infected and healthy individuals

Principal Investigator :   Dr. Arati Mane (Scientist B)

Category:   Basic Science

Funding agency:   Intramural

Budget:   ---

Total duration:   2 years

Study Initiation:  2005

Objectives:

  1. To study the species distribution of Candida isolates colonizing or infecting the oral cavities of HIV positive and HIV negative individuals.
  2. To study the virulence factors like enzyme production, adherence to buccal epithelial cells, hemolysis and phenotypic switching in the Candida isolates.
  3. To determine the genotypes of Candida albicans.
  4. To study the antifungal susceptibility pattern of the Candida isolates.

Current status:

The project is complete. Oral carriage of Candida in HIV positive individuals was 100% in symptomatic, 58.7% in asymptomatic and 22.4% in HIV negative ones. Candida albicans was the commonest isolate however non-albicans species like Candida tropicalis, lusitaniae, parapsilosis, glabrata and krusei were recovered. 12.3% of the isolates were resistant to azoles. Genotype A is the commonest in Candida albicans.
